Jools' Raw Power Squares

Posted by Jools Andres on Thursday, June 7, 2012 Under: health

I made these for the many students and guests who came to Blissful Yoga's Grand Opening in Sechelt last Saturday. I had a number of requests for the recipe, so here it is. These are better than anything you can buy - bar none! Use organic ingredients and share them widely. Adjust ingredients and amounts to suit your taste.

use a Magic Bullet, if you have one, or food processor to pulverise dry ingredients
  • 2 cups quick cook oats (or sometimes I use half quinoa flakes)
  • 2 or 3 tbsp cocoa powder (or carob, or a combination)
  • 1/4 cup flax seeds
  • 1/4 cup sesame, pumpkin or sunflower seeds
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
add and blend - I do this in the Magic Bullet, too
  • 1/4 cup nut butter or tahini
  • 1/4 - 1/3 cup raisins, figs, cranberries or a combination
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
pour into the dry ingredients, adding
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut (toast for extra flavour)
  • cinnamon and/or ground cardamom - or mint extract can be nice, too
mix well - I use my scrupulously clean hands as that is the most effective method. The dough should be very firm but not dry. Too sticky? Add a little more oats. Too dry? Add a little unsweetened applesauce if you have it, or just a bit of water.

smoosh into a square cake pan and refrigerate. Cut into squares when cold. Or, be fancy and roll into balls before refrigerating.

Make often and experiment - use different combinations. (Thanks to Sue Whitlock for her starter recipe.)

*Special secret ingredient if you like a little zing - 1/2 to 3/4 tsp freshly ground coarse black pepper...superb.
